Enis Goes Deep Twice, Bats Come Alive as Keene Pounds North Shore
Bats Put Up Season-High in Runs, Improve to 4-0-1
Keene, NH - Griffin Enis (Virginia) homered in consecutive innings and drove in four runs, ultimately reaching base in all five plate appearances, as the Keene SwampBats sprinted out to an 11-1 lead after four and went on to roll to a comfortable 12-6 victory over the North Shore Navigators on Wednesday night in front of 2,876 fans at Alumni Field.
The SwampBats (4-0-1) started off the game strong with a new starting pitcher, Jack Davis (UNC Asheville). After hitting the first batter, Davis was lights out and pitched four innings, gaving up only one hit, a home run, while striking out four of the 14 batters he faced.
Davis' command on the mound allowed the team's bats to truly thrive, giving him a big early cushion. Before the game associate head coach Casey O'Brien said tonight was the night the SwampBats were hitting their first home run of the season at home, and in the second inning O'Brien was proven correct.
Enis' shot to left, a three-run homer, gave the SwampBats a 4-0 lead in the second inning and the home team was far from done. By the end of the second inning the team would be leading 6-0, which included an RBI single by Jackson Marshall (Connecticut).
North Shore's Jace Roossien (Boston College) got one back with a solo homer in the top of the third, but Enis responded with a solo shot of his own, his second of the night and extended the Bats lead to 7-1.
Keene kept going, scoring in each of the first five innings to build a 12-1 advantage. Collin Anderson (Duke) added an RBI double in the fourth before Jackson Smith (Cincinnati) later poked a run-scoring hit up the middle to make it 11-1.
Racco Calise (Eckerd) came in to pitch for the SwampBats in the top of the fifth inning and got the win, allowing one run and two hits over four innings while walking one and striking out two.
Josh Doney (UMass Lowell) allowed a run in the first in a one-inning start for the Navigators (1-4) and took the loss. The visitors' pitching staff struggled to throw strikes all night, walking 12 with all six arms walking at least one and five of them multiple.
TJ Schuyler (Indiana) pitched the ninth for the Bats and allowed a three-run homer to Hunter Kingsbury with North Shore down to their final out, but Luke Johnson bounced to short on the first pitch of the next at bat to end it.
The Bats go on the road tomorrow (Thursday, June 11) to take on the Upper Valley Nighthawks for the second time in three days. First pitch is at 6:00.
