Lost Day in Vermont: Keene Swept in Doubleheader by Mountaineers
Bats Mostly Quiet in 3-0, 5-3 Losses; Vermont Scores Three Runs on Wild Pitches in Game 2
MONTPELIER, Vt. - After a 4-2 win the night prior, the Keene SwampBats (15-10-1) went back on the road to face the Vermont Mountaineers (11-16) in double header action at the Montpelier Recreation Field. The Bats went into this matchup with momentum and looked to take a 2-0 series lead in this division rivalry, while the Mountaineers looked to bounce back from a road loss.
Vermont struck first in game one after Bryce Rudisill lined a single down the right side, advancing David Alvarez to second and scoring Matthew Jackson. The lead would be expanded in the third after Elliot Miles stole second and made it home after a pair of throwing errors. This was then followed by a Rex Hauser single that scored Alvarez before he advanced to second on another throwing error.
The SwampBats were held scoreless in game one, as a pair of hits by Avery Smith (Penn State) and Jackson Smith (Cincinnati) served as their only baserunners.
Game two had a similar start, Matthew Minckler doubled to right center and Alvaraz was hit by a pitch. Minckler then stole third and proceeded to score on a wild pitch. A pair of more wild pitches would get Alvarez to third and ultimately home. Alvarez would reach second on a wild pitch and Minckler stole third before scoring on another wild pitch.
The SwampBats got themselves on the board in the fifth after Gavin Speirs (Charleston Southern) reached base safely on a fielder's choice before advancing to second on an error. He was then brought home on an Antonio Cordeiro (St. John's) single.
The Mountaineers continued to add onto their lead in the fifth inning. Miles drew a walk to get on base before Alvarez singled to right field, getting Miles to third. Redusill then singled to right field and brought Miles home.
The Bats would add on in the sixth after Kendrick got another run on the board for the SwampBats after hitting a double down the right field line, advancing Charlie Meglio (Rutgers) to third and scoring Chris Polemeni (Connecticut). Dylan Fitzsimmons (St John's) drew a bases loaded walk, bringing Meglio home.
The SwampBats saw Noah Berry (Samford) take the mound in game one, throwing five innings and striking out five Mountaineers in his fifth appearance of the year. It was Joe Olson (Louisville) who pitched the last home inning, getting one strikeout. The ball was given to Eamon McDermott (Duke) for the SwampBats in game two, he threw for 2.1 innings with no strikeouts. The ball was handed to Rocco Calise (Eckerd), he pitched 3.1 innings and struck out two batters. Robert Gilchrest (Connecticut) came in for the sixth with zero strikeouts.
The Mountaineers opened with Nicholas Falla, who pitched four innings and struck out five Bats' in the game one win. Jackson Hulcher threw the next pair of innings, striking out three before David Budd came in and closed out the game. Brendon Miller started game two for the Mountaineers, he went three innings and struck out seven batters in his outing. Max Weber took over in the fourth, throwing two innings and striking out a pair of batters. Andrew Tringe threw to and struck out one batter. Andrew Gendi was called in for the final 1.2 innings, striking out two batters to close out the game.
The SwampBats will look to bounce back as they return to Alumni Field to face the Mystic Schooners for the first time, first pitch is set for 6:35 tomorrow evening.
