VINEYARD HAVEN, Mass. - The Keene SwampBats took a trip to the islands to take on the Martha's Vineyard Sharks for their second matchup of the rematch of the 2025 championship. The Sharks threaten to break the SwampBats best regular season record in history as they entered the game at 25-8.
In the top of the first, potential fan vote All-Star Charlie Meglio (Rutgers) hit a two run RBI single to open the game and giving Keene (17-19-1) the early lead over Martha's Vineyard.
Eamon McDermott (Dartmouth) commanded the mound from the first inning. He threw 78 pitches for 5.1 innings keeping the first place team scoreless through 5 innings.
In the top of the sixth Keene's middle of the lineup continued to produce and a hit by Meglio and a sacrifice fly by Dylan Fitzsimmons (St Johns) scored another run for the SwampBats making it a 3-0 lead.
The Sharks responded in the bottom half of the sixth. After having two Sharks reach base with only one out, McDermott was pulled after an outstanding start. Griffin Madden's (Sacred Heart) first batter hit a two run RBI triple, and on a mishandled throw home, scored himself, tying the game in the bottom of the sixth.
Keene would get their best chance of the night to pull ahead with bases loaded and no outs in the 8th, but the bottom of the lineup was unable to produce. Martha's Vineyard capitalized on the missed opportunity and scored in the bottom of the inning, and ultimately winning the game 4-3.
Keene plays at home against Vermont tomorrow at 6:35 p.m. in hopes to keep a playoff spot. The Bats are now tied (but percentage points ahead) of ninth place Danbury, and have seen their lead over Valley shrink to only one game and their edge over the Mountaineers only a game and a half with seven to go.
