SwampBats mount late rally to win seventh straight
KEENE, NH - In a game that had a little bit of everything, the Keene SwampBats proved their mettle and took down the Upper Valley Nighthawks for the second time this season. Much like the first meeting between the two division rivals, this game went down to the wire. The SwampBats, who were down three runs in the middle of the fifth, overcame a two run deficit in the bottom of the ninth to take home the win, 8-7.
RHP Ben Rabatin (Kent State) started the contest for Keene, but it was SS Dylan Cupp (Mississippi State) who sparked the Bats in the bottom of one, hitting his first home run of the year out to center field, on a bizarre play where the ball hit off Upper Valley CF Joey Dwyer's glove and over the fence.
Upper Valley notched their first run of the game in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly from SS Jack Spanier, and added on with another in the fourth with an RBI double from 3B Cooper Blauser. Keene responded after Ty Mainolfi hit an RBI single for his third RBI in the last two games.
The game flipped on its head in the top of the fifth, after RF Anthony Greco drove in Jack Spanier on a sac fly, and the Nighthawks left fielder Cole Fellows stepped up to the plate. On a 2-0 count, he got a pitch low and inside and deposited it to right-center field, making it a 6-3 game.
RHP Andrew Lepine (Stetson) and RHP John Malone (Samford) got the Bats to the ninth only allowing one run, meaning it was time for RHP Aydan Decker-Petty (Indiana) to take the mound. He fired in three quick outs, striking out one, bringing the Bats back to the plate in a 7-5 game in the ninth.
Dylan Cupp reached on an error to begin the frame, and the Bats only built from there. Chandler Tuupo (Charleston Southern) and Nick Romano (Florida Atlantic) reached with singles, with Tuupo scoring Cupp. TJ Schuyler (Indiana) broke his hitting slump by coming up big with a sacrifice fly to drive in Ripken Reese (Kent State), who pinch ran for Tuupo. Andrew Bell (Duke) came to the plate with the bases loaded and two away, and got hit by a pitch to drive in the game winning run.
The Bats move to 7-1 on the season, and are off on Saturday, but take to the road again to face the Vermont Mountaineers on Sunday, June 16th. First pitch between the Bats and Mountaineers is set for 6:30 PM, and the game will be streamed live on NECBL+.
