KEENE, NH - In a rescheduled set of games, the first of which was meant to be played opening week, the Keene SwampBats (10-1) swept the season series against the Valley Blue Sox, winning the first seven-inning contest 6-2, and taking home the second game 3-0.
LHP Alex Walsh (Jacksonville) started the SwampBats off on the right foot in game one, The tall southpaw recorded another effective start, letting the defense do its job behind him, working three innings of scoreless ball while fanning two. Before Walsh had even stepped on the mound, with Keene playing as the away team in the first game, he had a three-run cushion to work with, as Dylan Cupp (Mississippi State), Jack Herring (ECU), and Marshall Lipsey (FAU) all came around to score in the top of the first.
Later in the game, SwampBats utility man Ripken Reese (Kent State) began to return to last summer's form, blasting a two run shot over the right field fence in the fourth inning to make it 5-0, and adding another solo homer in the sixth for Keene's sixth run of the game. They would allow two in the bottom of the sixth off a home run from Valley 1B Clay Burdette (Xavier), but that would be where the scoring stopped, as Keene took home the 6-2 win.
In the second game of the doubleheader, SwampBats RHP Nik Pavia (Franklin Pierce) was handed the ball as the starter, but walked three Blue Sox in the first to load the bases. Pavia, with two outs, got out of the jam on a short popout to second base.
It took a little longer for Keene's offense to get going in this one, as neither team was able to touch home until the bottom of the fourth, when Keene C Zack Thompson made a sacrifice groundout to score 3B Nick Romano (3B). Pavia's day ended after three innings, and then it was RHP John Malone's time to shine, as he struck out eight in his four innings of work, six of which were backwards K's. The Bats added their last run of the game on a Chandler Tuupo (Charleston Southern) RBI in the fifth, and Malone was awarded the win for his efforts.
Keene has tied their franchise record for most wins in a row at 10, and will try and break the record with a win in the first game of another doubleheader at Upper Valley tomorrow.
First pitch of game one at Upper Valley is scheduled for 4:00 PM, with game two starting 30 minutes after the conclusion of game one. Both contests will be streamed live on NECBL+.
